What is Chiso Arts and Culture?

When the elements such as dyeing and weaving techniques developed by Chiso; the city of Kyoto, where Chiso has been based for more than 460 years; and the beauty Chiso creates are unlocked, a diversity which includes aspects of every academic field and research is revealed. For example, more than 20 processes are required for producing a yuzen-dyed kimono, meaning that relations with academic studies including agronomics, chemistry, and engineering are essential. Also, Chiso’s role in Kyoto was not only to be engaged in the garment business, but also to act as a patron of culture and art including a relationship with the Kyoto art world, and to have a royal warrant in the Meiji era—full of various keywords that are linked to the development of the city of Kyoto. What Chiso has produced has been developed into fashion, art, culture, and beauty, going beyond the limits of traditional kimonos.
We define these elements as “Chiso Arts and Culture” and cross the boundaries of fields and combine them to pursue its possibility.
